Learning Letter
The
course as a whole was a great way for me to reconnect as well as connect with
literature that is for young adults. The reminder of how much great work was
out there and reconnecting with books I read when I was younger was really
great. I also was able to read a novel that that I hadn’t before and was pleasantly
surprised how much I liked it. Being able to stand in front of the class and
talk about literature especially newer literature was entertaining and a lot more
interesting than I expected. The unit plan was an incredibly difficult project
that at times had me questioning if I would ever be capable to come up with something
that would be interesting day in and day out. However, when I was finished the
results did make me believe I could handle it.
The
theories that we read were some of the best I have read in a class that was
education based. The pedagogy of the oppressed was great and something I would
love to read more of, but I really connected with Cris Tovani’s various methods
as well as the document on discussion-based teaching. Discussion based teaching
is something that really want to be the foundation of my classroom so having
that at my disposal is going to be great as I’m just starting to teach.
Thinking
of myself as a teacher is still not fully possible for me yet. I mean, I have
times where I definitely feel it but there are also times that make me feel
discouraged. Being able to hear other classmates’ feelings about teaching,
especially in such a small class, was helpful in that many of them are in the same
area feelings wise as me. I feel like this class helped me realize that there
is steps to becoming a successful teaching and I’m still just at the very beginning
of it.
