Assignment Template
Pre-reading in many cases
is key to having students prepare themselves to engage with the text they are
about to read. Some text isn’t exactly engaging so for you as an instructor is helpful
to find things that can connect to the text that will catch the attention of the
students before engaging in the text. If the student has interesting background
information rooted in the text, then they will be more apt to read it thoroughly
knowing the history behind it. Pre-reading is also a precursor to what the
template refers to as “Reading Rhetorically”. This practice is what I strive as
a future teacher, and I believe most other instructors strive for when
assigning a text to their students. Finding the intention of the author, and the
meaning behind the words is true deep reading and builds on the students
understanding of not only that particular text but also their ability to interpret
and hypothesize future texts that they read.
Alongside understanding
the meaning behind what the author is saying, the understanding of vocabulary
in itself will help students in their reading endeavors. Understanding the vocabulary
assists reluctant readers and prevents discouragement from continuing reading
as well.
From reading the student will
then transition to writing which is a hurdle all on its own. Having students
understand the basics of writing a paper are what starts their journey comfortably.
Starting out with something as simple as breaking it down into a introduction,
body, and conclusion will give the framework for what their paper should look
like. Revising, and editing is also another process that students should not
fear and should understand can only improve their writing. Having multiple
drafts is not a failure but is instead progress towards improvement. Also,
showing them that revising should be done in stages is also important because
attempting to find all issues in a paper in one go can be daunting and near
impossible, not to mention discouraging to the student as a whole. Also using minimal marking is a strategy that will keep from overwhelming a student and questioning their skills as a writer. Nothing is more stressful than seeing marks and writing all over a draft. as opposed to minimal marks that allows the student to find their own mistakes and make the improvements on their own
